A LITTLE STARDUST WITH BREAKFAST

When guests sit down for breakfast at The Lamplight Inn Bed and Breakfast near Berlin, Ohio, they’re treated to romantic ballads and show tunes played by innkeeper Larry Wilgus at the baby grand. Familiar songs like “Stardust” “September Song” and “Till There Was You” accompany hearty breakfast entrees of stuffed French toast and baked oatmeal. Upon hearing “Unforgettable”, one couple got up from the breakfast table and danced to this timeless love song that had been played at their wedding.

Wilgus and his wife, Helen, purchased the four-year-old B&B in April, 2006. Antiques and art from their previous home were added to the furnishings in the inn. Six guest rooms in the spacious Amish-built home are done up in a light Country Victorian style. You’ll find the amenities one expects in a fine country inn -- luxurious linens, Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, DVD players and satellite TV.

Guests can settle down in the cozy gathering room and select a book, games or a DVD from a well stocked credenza. Perhaps the favorite spot to relax in the inn is on the upper and lower wraparound porches with a view of the Amish countryside spread out below; according to Wilgus, you can see 15 miles on a clear day.

Ohioans are not the only ones who have discovered the inn. Visitors from Germany, Scotland, the Netherlands, England, and South Africa have made The Lamplight Inn their home while visiting the Holmes County Amish community, and The Singing Innkeeper finds international visitors often request classical pieces at breakfast.

It’s a short walk or drive from the inn to the shops of Berlin. Pick up cheese, Amish crafts, furniture, chocolates, and baked goods to take home or stop for lunch at one of the local favorite eateries, The Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant on Main Street in Berlin.
